His focus in both private and organizational venues is his clients’ emotional and cognitive potential for creative and imaginative work. His overriding strength is the capability to invite people to dialogue in trusting and thoughtful ways by unburying their internal dialogue with themselves on which their communication with others is based. Leadership can be cultivated

The research is now clear: leaders grow over time, and leadership can be thoughtfully and intentionally nurtured. This matters, because leaders matter. Great leaders support people to be their best selves, they create the conditions where massive problems can be solved, and they build organizations that are creative and resilient in the face of change.

Yet you probably know leaders who didn’t grow at all—even when they needed to. Great leadership doesn’t happen by mistake or chance. It happens when people intentionally develop the most helpful leadership habits.

What does current leadership need the most?

– The world needs empathetic leadership. We need more people to understand that other parties might feel differently. Foster that by…. I don’t have a good answer for that other than by teaching and educating people.

– I came here because the highest leverage thing I can do is to influence and shape people who are going to be in influential positions.

Why do we see polarization in today’s world?

– Trump recognized this group of people that most of the elite don’t talk to. Many people live in echo chambers where they only talk to people who agree with themselves. I will talk to people whom I don’t agree with. As teachers, our responsibility is to make that happen. That’s why I proposed a faculty trip to Detroit, Michigan. We need to understand what is...

A Radical New Model for Unleashing Your Company's Potential. In most organizations nearly everyone is doing a second job no one is paying them for--namely, covering their weaknesses, trying to look their best, and managing other people's impressions of them. There may be no greater waste of a company's resources. The ultimate cost: neither the organization nor its people are able to realize their full potential. What if a company did everything in its power to create a culture in which everyone--not just select "high potentials"--could overcome their own internal barriers to change and use errors and vulnerabilities as prime opportunities for personal and company growth?

She recently developed and taught an MIT course on the concept of Growth Mindset, teaching students how to embrace and overcome academic and career challenges. Lourdes holds a PhD from MIT’s Biology Department.

What is a good leader and how can we foster the right mindsets?

– Good leaders are individuals who can take feedback and learn from a challenging experience. They embrace the challenge, look for opportunities to learn in the face of failure, and are not just looking for ego-boosting success. You can foster such a mindset by looking into how behavioural change happens. Sometimes, a ‘fixed mindset’ can be so ingrained in people that they can’t recognize it themselves. It takes time to cultivate a ‘growth mindset’, to develop the belief that talents and behaviours are...

What are the big leadership challenges in today’s world?

– One big challenge today is economic polarization that combined with the automation of jobs create new poverty in America. There is a need to explore what to do with the many people who will have difficulties finding a job.

What characterizes employees in the US?

– Over here, self-realization and ‘happiness’ come second. Because nothing is certain and the best thing you can do is to first focus on making yourself financially independent, then you focus on self-realization.

– The US is a fact obsessed country. Decisions are made based on quantitative data about how consumers behave. However, this information is often...

How do we grow future leaders?

– Companies should try to find leaders who haven’t all received the same professional training and educational upbringing.

– Organizations need people who know about psychology, sensing… somebody who can map the world in a new way; and not only based on numbers and bottom lines.

What is wrong with leadership today?

– The ideal leader understands what responsibility and administration mean for the community. For the entirety. A good example is the dairy coop. When you make leadership a career track, it becomes a personal project.

– Today, too much delegation – and bonus systems – create unhealthy competition. It harms quality and competencies. People end up competing against each other. Focusing on the wrong things.

– The cooperatives have become so successful that they have become corporations. It’s not good. Now it is about personal ambition. The result is less trust.

What does current leadership need the most?

– I want to make...

More
People in companies are often stuck in narrow, repetitive patterns of conversation that provide them with numbing, repressive and even neurotic experiences. We should look at communication, not competences, as the most predictive group activity there is in forecasting viability and agility. The opportunity provided by interaction technologies lies in the widening and deepening of communication leading to new learning, to new voices taking part and to new enriching conversations that can break the boundaries of siloed organizational units and stale process charts. A key management challenge today is to understand that the only way to guarantee agility and resilience is to participate actively and widely in the conversations that matter in an enriching way.

What was your personal path leading to the recognition of future leadership?

From the very beginning of my life, I have been interested in how to make other people work together and prosper. In my teenage and younger years, I took on leader roles in sports, music and theatre. In my profession as a social worker, I have been the leader of an after-school care centre for school children for 20 years. Latest on, I am a local chairman of the board in a political organisation. All of these activities have been circling around leadership one way or another.

In 2005, I began a personal leadership training course based on the wisdom and tolls of the Native Americans called Earth Wisdom. In extension to my personal training, I was certified as a Council Guide. This certification, combined with life experiences and theoretical knowledge from different areas, has shaped my life purpose into being dedicated in co-creating, transforming and evolving both the perspective of personal...

Sandja Brügmann is one of the leading voices within sustainable social-impact change and conscious leadership. Aside from this conversation, Sandja is also sharing her perspectives with us as part of the Leading Human’s brain trust.

What is the core of conscious capitalism?

– Humans are destroying themselves by how we are consuming, a big part of this is founded in how business is being conducted.

– The economic model builds on homo economicus, the rational man. But mankind is not rational. We are driven by our feelings, often unconsciously driven by fear. Our world is currently built on a foundation which is untrue.

– As long as we are at a lower level of consciousness, we will be in a stage of survival with a focus on ‘me’ and we will not be capable of making long-term, sustainable decisions. Conscious leaders are long-term oriented.

We construct a measure of corporate purpose within a sample of US companies based on approximately 500,000 survey responses of worker perceptions about their employers. We find that this measure of purpose is not related to financial performance. However, high purpose firms come in two forms: firms that are characterized by high camaraderie between workers and firms that are characterized by high clarity from management. We document that firms exhibiting both high purpose and clarity have systematically higher future accounting and stock market performance, even after controlling for current performance, and that this relation is driven by the perceptions of middle management and professional staff rather than senior executives, hourly or commissioned workers. Taken together, these results suggest that firms with employees that maintain strong beliefs in the meaning of their work experience better performance.

Dr Smood is a healthy and organic boutique cafe concept founded upon a modern business concept and run on solid principles. Through is work, Peter holds the newest insights about the young and future workforce.

What is most important to focus on for future leaders?

– You must understand yourself to be able to understand others. To have self-insight and self-control is vital. You can’t change who you are, but you can change how you behave.

– You can’t rely on a ‘one model fits all’. Leadership is always context based. Leaders should be able to navigate amongst different settings, different cultures and different people which is only possible if you have self-insight. If you cannot differentiate between settings, you are one-dimensional and you can be damn successful in that dimension – in one place – but in that place only.

– Be careful when it comes to the...

Over the past five years, there’s been an explosion of interest in purpose-driven leadership. Academics argue persuasively that an executive’s most important role is to be a steward of the organization’s purpose. Business experts make the case that purpose is a key to exceptional performance, while psychologists describe it as the pathway to greater well-being.

What are some key differences between British and Scandinavian corporate culture?

Compared to Scandinavia, there is a difference in the way people are managed and how they communicate in the workspace, particularly when it concerns low-income jobs.  People occupying such jobs in London – or in the US – are often just asked to “follow the manual” rather than asked to think for themselves. Of course, I’m generalising, but as a result, lower-income employees in the US or UK tend to engage less with a company’s vision or values than in Scandinavia and aren’t really expected to so, either.

Another thing that struck me when I started working in London, is the effect culture and education has on how...

Nikolaj Gammeltoft oversees Bloomberg News’ coverage of emerging-market economies, focusing on China, Russia, and Israel. Before his career in financial news, Nikolaj spent seven years at TDC, Denmark’s largest telecommunications and cable TV operator, where he served as vice president with responsibility for strategy and M&As under the company’s private-equity ownership among other leadership positions.

Given the latest developments in our society, what do current leaders need to consider the most?

– Our increasing wealth creates demands for more than everyday needs. When you don’t have to worry about providing food for your family, you start to think of other priorities in your life.

– We are obviously living in a communication society. As a manager, I am constantly bombarded with things I have to communicate with others. The ability to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate is becoming more and more important as opposed to being a narrow expert within one’s field of...

Living Institute consults companies on leadership that promotes diversity and gender equality. Heidi Rottbøll Andersen, Founding Partner and Kasper Jelsbech Knudsen, PhD and Chief Consultant share their thoughts on the trends and developments that impact the direction in which leadership is evolving.

What is the importance of diversity in future leadership?
Heidi: We see the importance of diversity primarily in two areas. First, in the increasing intergovernmental demand for sustainable developments of Corporate Social Responsibility including human rights as formulated in the UN SDGs. Living up to these demands requires a broad representation of different people on the top levels of every organisation and company. The second is what we call ‘the business case for diversity’; meaning that those companies that have cracked the code for making diversity work in their favour consistently outperform companies with less diversity. Diversity is in this sense a strategic business...

Sheela Maini Søgaard is Partner and CEO at BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group and is thus leader of more than 450 people across New York, London and Copenhagen. She has been with the company since 2008.

What characterizes leadership today?

Successful leaders must be accessible. Speak about stuff people don’t expect and have conversations you otherwise wouldn’t. Know when to use the hierarchy and when to be just a fellow human.

I see the most delicate leadership dilemma as to when to give people mandates without pushing them too far into areas where they are not comfortable

The young people nowadays are very driven and they have a unique sense of self-worth which I truly admire and don’t remember my generation having to the same extent. They have more complex demands and expectations of their employees and I find that we are often confronted with how exactly to meet these.

How does New York and Copenhagen differ?

In New York, I’m the CEO, in Copenhagen, I just blend into the...

What is different about leading the next generation?

The current means of motivation do not suffice for millennials. If I ask a millennial to do an Excel model, the response won’t necessarily be “yes mam” but rather “why me instead of him” or “me instead of you”. I may, of course, be exaggerating, but the point is that a clear understanding of millennials is needed to lead them properly.

One driver of this different attitude is that we are at a much higher order in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs than we were 50 years ago, which is what our current ways of leading is built upon. And as our more basic needs have been fulfilled, our...

Maiken Piil is a leadership advisor and coach with expertise in Conscious Business and Leadership. She is on a purpose-driven mission to bring consciousness to business and leadership. As she puts it – the world needs it.

What do future leaders need the most?
– Regardless of what you pinpoint as future leadership, you will never get there unless you engage in continuous, deliberate personal growth. You will not be able to embrace the magnitude of what is required to be successful – you might be able to succeed in one or a few areas but to reach the full leadership potential, you need a high level of mental complexity that only deliberate personal growth can give you.

– This means that companies will have to enter into an arena of personal development that they up until now have stayed away from. It might, of course, create new dilemmas that need to be handled. But I simply do not see how any leader or company will be truly successful if they do not embrace this.

– Many...

Who will be leaders of tomorrow?

– The singular, charismatic leader is forever gone. Today everybody has a say; that is the method that we know from the Internet.

– The archetypical leader of tomorrow will let other people co-create their ideas of a future with him or her.

– Leaders of tomorrow talk authentically about love, hate, the meaning of life, happiness and unhappiness. In dialogues.

What does the next stage organization look like?

– Overriding moral purposes is what will connect us now and in the future. It is no longer well-defined structures with fixed titles, roles and responsibilities that will keep companies together.

– People in demand will think of themselves as operating in a floating, loosely coupled civilization and culture.

– Today, certain longterm established companies struggle to find their purpose. They have come too far on their journey, and they have brought on board too many people who do not share the same dream.

Does inequality...

How do you see people’s mindset towards work change?

As a private equity company, we compete against other industries to employ top talent, which will eventually go on to become leaders of the next generation. The criteria by which these bright minds choose their employers have evolved over time. Today, the younger generations when they choose jobs to care much more about the purpose of what they do than previous generations. This has made start-ups an increasingly popular place to work for MBA graduates, management consultants and investment bankers because of the direct impact and sense of purpose the employees have. Banks have a hard time providing the...

More
Gina Hayden is the author of “Becoming a Conscious Leader”. Having worked with several global consultancies and organizations, such as PwC and AT. Kearney, Gina recognized the need for a change in the way we lead to become more conscious and authentic.

Why is there a need for conscious leadership?

For many leaders today, success is all about striving to achieve. This becomes most apparent in business, where the dominant business narrative forces people to focus only on returns or on shareholder value, splitting off other parts of themselves, like their purpose or their values. People become disconnected from themselves, from what makes them happy and fulfilled. We chase our tails for success, but ultimately it becomes empty. The question becomes, how can we run profitable businesses and be fully human? A first step is to consider self-mastery. From the perspective of our egos, we are conditioned to follow specific patterns and beliefs, and we follow these unconsciously. This...

What do future leaders need to do?

– We are living in a time of upheaval. It is no longer sufficient to continue what has worked so far. Leaders of the future need to articulate an attractive journey to a shared future. The charismatic leader takes over, and leaves the rational leader behind.

– Certain jobs will be extended by technology. Today, I will only consult lawyers and doctors that have been extended by technology, and never the ones that haven’t been. This is already the case today, but it will increase and extend as AI develops.

Will hierarchies survive?

– The organizational immune system exists. If somebody presents a new idea in a designed organization, it will likely face a hard time. Risk is minimized to safeguard existing value creation.

– New thoughts and ideas are challenging existing dogmas, but they face difficult circumstances in the large organizations. We have built to scale not experiment and change.

Is being small a good thing?

What role does meaning play in today’s work culture?

 – We are living in a comfort culture. There is no gratitude about just having a job. We have an expectation that our job should be meaningful, which is great and beautiful as long as we are aware that it also takes hard work.

– Below the need for meaning, the ‘old’ needs are still hiding. If a leader can’t provide safety and fulfil the employees’ materialistic needs, it doesn’t matter if he or she provides meaning.
